With reference to the correspondence noted

in the margin, I have the honour to inform you that at the beginning of this year I took the opportunity of the in- -troduction of the Importation and Exportation Ordinance No. 32 of 1915, under which the Superintendent of Imports
and Exports gets full information of imports, exports and
transit cargo, to have recorded the data upon which trade
statistics for this Colony can be made available. Thanks to the careful and intelligent handling by the Superintend-
-ent of Imports and Exports of the wide powers conferred
upon him, and to the willing co-operation of the Mercantile
Community, and especially of the Chinese section of it, full
information concerning all goods imported into, exported
from or passing through the Colony has been obtained without
detriment to the trade of the Port, and I see no reason why
the collection of such information should not be continued
after the war and I therefore propose to continue it.
It has been found necessary to engage a well qualified clerk to compile the necessary statistics from
the mass of information collected and there being no one in
the Government Service with the requisite knowledge and
experience
